History

In 1998, Betsy Donovan, gathered concerned community members who had been active in homeless services in Roseville.  Originally focusing on the need for additional transitional services for homeless men and women in Roseville, the group quickly realized the large unmet transitional housing and service needs in all of Placer County.

As the group spent time planning the operations of this new organization, a discussion ensued around the need to have a name that would represent the mission and passion for the population we serve.  After considering several ideas the group decided on The Lazarus Project.  The name Lazarus comes from the story of the rich man and the beggar (Lazarus) with the significance of recognizing the necessity of sharing one’s wealth and opportunities with the poor and the benefits that come with helping those who are in need.  Although we are not a religious organization, the story of Lazarus fits nicely into our mission and values (Luke 16: 19-25, New Living Translation).

In addition to spearheading homeless prevention and re-housing services in our local community, The Lazarus Project has since opened 4 homes providing housing and supportive services to men and women in several locations within Placer County.  We are currently busy working on a 9 acre multi-housing project in Loomis which will create the first Permanent Supportive Housing development in Placer County that will assist families and veterans.  Call our office to find out more about the project and how you can help address the issues of homelessness and poverty in our community.
